Trip Overview

Overview

Gokyo Valley Trek also includes an assortment of turquoise-tinted lakes, which is highly sacred for Hindus and Buddhists. The major attraction of Gokyo Valley Trek covers a hike to stunning Gokyo Ri at 5,340m. From here, we can enjoy the magnificent sunrise view over the world’s tallest mountain range and the Gokyo valley beneath us.

  1. view of the world’s highest mountain range includes Mt. Everest (8,848.86m), Mt. Lhotse (8,515m), Mt. Makalu (8,481m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m), Mt. Baruntse (7,129m), Mt. Pumori (7,161m), Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812m) and numbers of other snow-capped peaks. Below the Gokyo Ri is a board rubble-covered Ngozumpa Glacier which stretches towards Mt. Cho Oyu to be the largest glacier in Nepal.

Gokyo Valley Trek Route

Gokyo Valley trekking starts after a scenic trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the lower reaches of Everest. Then we follow the Dudh Koshi River and walk through the dense rhododendron forest to Namche Bazaar.

We schedule a rest day at Namche that allows us to acclimatize well and explore the region. Namche is the heart of the Khumbu region and is only the place that offers ATMs, Cybers, Restaurants, Bars, etc.

Next, we walk up the edge of Namche and counter the hillside to reach a juncture point at Sanasa: NW to Gokyo and NE to Everest. From here, we leave the main steam trail and walk across the sleepy village of Dole and Macchermo. Next, walking through the snout of the Ngozumpa glacier, we follow the moraine and walk past two lakes to the summer grazing hamlet of Gokyo (located at the edge of the third lake, Dudh Pokhari). Gokyo Valley is engulfed by daunting peaks, with Mt. Cho Oyu standing right to the north.

Best Seasons to Trek Gokyo Valley

Like most treks in Nepal, the best time for the Gokyo valley trek is spring (March-May) and autumn (September – November). However, there is no absolute best time for everyone; it depends on how you feel about the crowds and your tolerance for heat, cold, and rain. Each season has its pros and cons.

Weather in spring (March-May) and august (September – November) remains stable with clear views. But nights get a bit cold at higher elevations, so it is wise to pack some warm clothes.

Summer (June – August) is a monsoon in Nepal and receives heavy rainfall with a threat of floods and landslides. Plus, the rain makes the trail wet, muddy, and slippery. But monsoon is a real boon for keen botanists, as the entire vegetation is at its best.

Winter (December – February) is freezing in the Everest region (sometimes the temperature drops to -10 degrees Celsius), and teahouses at higher reaches often remain closed due to heavy snowfall. If you are intending to trek Gokyo Valley in winter, we suggest you check the availability of the teahouse.

Gokyo Valley Trek Difficulty

Gokyo Valley Trek is a moderately difficult trek. The trek lasts for two weeks, beginning with the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and gradually climbing up to the Gokyo Valley Camp. The highest altitude is reached at EBC or, more frequently, at Kala Patthar (5,545m). Proper acclimatization is necessary to be able to complete this trek.

Most people can complete this trek with some training and physical preparation, even if they have no prior trekking experience. However, if you are not fit or have some health issues, it is recommended to consult with us or your doctor first before planning this trek.

Gokyo Valley Trek Cost

The cost of Gokyo Valley Trek will be determined by the type of trek you are planning, your trekking route, time on the trail, and the season you choose to trek. Overall, the cost of the Gokyo Valley Trek is about USD 1485 to 1525 USD.pp

Gokyo Valley Trek Itinerary usually includes hotel Accommodation, 2 Nigh Room in Kathmandu on BB Basis, both way domestic flights, trekking permits, meals, professional trekking guides, porters, insurance, accommodation, all the entry fees, etc. The cost of this trek also depends upon traveling as private or in a group. For the Gokyo Valley Trip, you need to have two kinds of permits

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

You will be entering Sagarmatha National Park during this trek, and you need to pay the entrance fee to visit this national park. Your trekking provider will help you to acquire the national park permit.

The permit fee for SAARC country is NPR. 1,500 per person for sagarmatha national park Entry permits (it's approx 15$) and for other nations NPR. 3,000 per person. (it's approx 23$) including 13%vat.

Local Government Entry Permit.
Khaumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit. per person NPR.3,000 per person ( it's approx 23$) including 13% vat.

Our other recommended trek is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

You can see the clear view of the main temple and ongoing ritual from the vantage point located right next to the holy Bagmati River. You can also perceive the cementation process of Hindu bodies at Aryaghat.

Boudhanath Stupa:

Boudhanath Stupa is the holiest religious site for Tibetan Buddhists. Built in the 5th century, it is a tall mandala with four pairs of eyes of Lord Buddha in four cardinal directions keeping eternal water over the people and their deeds.

At Boudhanath Stupa, you will find many small stupas and shops displaying prayer flags, statues, holy books, and more.

Swayambhunath:

Swayambhunath Stupa is a hilltop stupa that overlooks the entire valley and hills surrounding it. It is the oldest monument in Kathmandu valley that dates back to 2,000 years. It is sacred for both Hindus and Buddhist followers.

Safe and sanitary treks of your dreams

Buddhi Rai led my wife and I (and 9 other U.S trekkers aged 40s to 80) on a trek on the Tibetan Plateau (Mustang) and a elephant-and-rhino safari by foot and canoe in Chitwan National Park in October 2025. We took two other treks led by Buddhi to Tsum Valley (2022) and rhododendron trails near Annapurna (2024). On all three treks, his team put safety first and met each trekker's daily needs, including healthy meals/water and helping hands (and/or rides) when needed. We were introduced to Buddhi by his friend/mentor Sydney Frymire from the Washington DC area and New York. Sydney described her Nepal trek experiences in her (Amazon) book, "How a Cup of Masala Tea Changed My Life." Buddhi and many of his guides and staff come from near Basa, his home village.

Trip of Lifetime. 2

“Buddhi has been our lead guide and organizer on three Nepal treks since 2017. He has impressed us as an outstanding leader with deep experience and an extremely professional and trustworthy organizer. On our trips, he handled the sometimes-complex challenges and unavoidable surprise situations brilliantly, always finding safe and sensible solutions. I would never choose a different guide for my next trek in Nepal. Ingrid & Hans Schulz” From USA.

Namaste to you Buddhi.
You were and will always be a source of inspiration to me!
Your way of walking “the path” … one step at a time was more than just “guide-man-ship”.
It has been a mantra for reinforcing my life every day.
I hope I return to Nepal as well. ❤️
My memories of the beautiful country and people are etched in my heart forever!
Next time a gentler trek! ;)…
I’m glad to hear your family doing well. Don’t forget to send those pictures from time to time! :)
Sending love to them and you! From USA.
