Overview

The Everest Base Camp Trek is an amazing adventure of two weeks to the Everest Base Camp and back, truly a lifetime dream journey for many travelers. As the highest peak in the world, Everest is on the must-visit list for people throughout the world. Even if they want to, most people won’t get to the top of the world for various reasons; sheer difficulty, budget limitations, or health issues. But what most people can, in fact, accomplish is a trek to its base camp.

Undoubtedly, the Everest Base Camp Trek is the most popular in Nepal, attracting thousands of local and international visitors every year. Our 2-week long journey starts with the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by the trek to Phakding. The next day, we will enter the Sagarmatha National Park as we trek past Monjo. This UNESCO Natural Heritage Site is a protected area that covers an area of 1,148 square kilometers. We will trek through this area which is home to a variety of exotic Himalayan flora and fauna for most of our trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek Route

Eventually, we will reach Namche Bazaar, a famous market town called the gateway to Everest since most trekkers pass through here. Passing through a number of major Sherpa villages such as Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, we will eventually reach the main highlight of our trek at the Everest Base Camp (5,364m.)

Standing at the foot of the highest peak in the world will be a humbling and memorable experience. The next morning, we will hike up to Kala Patthar, an even better location in terms of scenery. This place is known as a photographer’s paradise as it sports a breathtaking panorama of peaks all around, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Changtse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and more. These two days are undoubtedly the most important and rewarding ones on the Everest Base Camp Trek. Soon after, we will begin the return journey and reach the Sherpa capital Namche in just a couple of days. In doing so, we will have another chance to experience the fascinating lifestyle and culture of the Sherpa people. Another day of trekking leads us back to Lukla, where we will catch the scenic flight back to Kathmandu. With this, our Everest Base Camp Trek 14 Days is successfully completed.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek

Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the best treks in Nepal, without a doubt. Selecting the best time to go on this trek is an important decision. For the average trekker, the spring and autumn seasons are the best seasons for sure. These periods that last from March to May and September to November are peak seasons for trekking in Nepal. This is because these periods have the ideal condition for traveling. There is nothing more to ask for, from pleasant weather to clear skies, lush natural beauty, and incredible views.

The winter months (December, January, and February) are a unique time to trek to the Everest Base Camp. As this is the off-season, the trails are relatively empty, and the base camp is similar since nobody is attempting to scale Everest. This means low prices for everything, including food and accommodation. However, there is a reason this is the off-season. The temperatures drop to subzero, and there tends to be a lot of snowfall as well. Trekking during this time can be tougher and is only suitable for the more experienced trekkers.

The monsoon season, also known as the summer season, is similar to winter trekking to EBC. The trek will be more challenging, and the wet trails will be tougher to navigate, but it can still be done with proper equipment, effort, and experience. And for those who do, off-season discounts, uncrowded trails, and stunning views await.

Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty

Everest Base Camp Trek is a moderate trek. The trek lasts for two weeks, beginning with the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and gradually climbing up to the Everest Base Camp. The highest altitude is reached at EBC or, more frequently, at Kala Patthar (5,545m). Proper acclimatization is necessary to be able to complete this trek.

Most people can complete this trek with some training and physical preparation, even if they have no prior trekking experience. However, if you are not fit or have some health issues, it is recommended to consult with us or your doctor first before planning this trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek Cost

The cost of Everest Base Camp Trek will be determined by the type of trek you are planning, your trekking route, time on the trail, and by the season you choose to trek. Overall, the Everest Base Camp Trek cost for 11-12 days is about USD 1855 to 1955 USD. Everest Base Camp Trek price is relatively low than other trekking because of the accommodation's low transportation costs and price.

Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary usually includes hotel accommodation during the trek, domestic flights, trekking permits, meals, professional trekking guides, porters, insurance entry fees, permit, 2-night Hotel in Kathmandu on BB Basis etc. The cost of this trek also depends upon traveling as private or in a group. For the Everest Base Camp Trip you need to have two kinds of permits:

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

You will be entering Sagarmatha National Park during this trek, and you need to pay the entrance fee to visit this national park. Your trekking provider will help you to acquire the national park permit.

The permit fee for SAARC country is NPR. 1,500 per person for Sagarmatha national park Entry permits (it's approx. 15$) and for other nations NPR. 3,000 per person. (it's approx. 23$) including 13%vat.

Local Government Entry Permit.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit. per person NPR.3,000 per person (it’s approx. 23$) including 13% vat.

Our other recommended trek is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Safe and sanitary treks of your dreams

Buddhi Rai led my wife and I (and 9 other U.S trekkers aged 40s to 80) on a trek on the Tibetan Plateau (Mustang) and a elephant-and-rhino safari by foot and canoe in Chitwan National Park in October 2025. We took two other treks led by Buddhi to Tsum Valley (2022) and rhododendron trails near Annapurna (2024). On all three treks, his team put safety first and met each trekker's daily needs, including healthy meals/water and helping hands (and/or rides) when needed. We were introduced to Buddhi by his friend/mentor Sydney Frymire from the Washington DC area and New York. Sydney described her Nepal trek experiences in her (Amazon) book, "How a Cup of Masala Tea Changed My Life." Buddhi and many of his guides and staff come from near Basa, his home village.

“Buddhi has been our lead guide and organizer on three Nepal treks since 2017. He has impressed us as an outstanding leader with deep experience and an extremely professional and trustworthy organizer. On our trips, he handled the sometimes-complex challenges and unavoidable surprise situations brilliantly, always finding safe and sensible solutions. I would never choose a different guide for my next trek in Nepal. Ingrid & Hans Schulz” From USA.
